Istinja (Purification After Using the Bathroom):

  • Definition: The act of purifying oneself after using the bathroom, referred to as Istinja.
  • Istibra: Clearing oneself of any remaining drops of urine before performing wudhu.
    • Techniques include walking, coughing, or leaning to one side.
  • Sunnah and Obligatory Actions:
    • Istinja is sunnah when impurities do not spread beyond the outlet.
    • It becomes obligatory to wash with water if impurity spreads beyond the size of a dirham.
  • Materials for Purification:
    • Preferred: Water.
    • Alternative: Stones or similar objects. Combining both methods is most ideal.

  • Enter with the left foot and recite the du’a for entering the bathroom.
  • Avoid facing or turning the back to the Qibla while relieving oneself.
  • Do not urinate in shaded areas, water bodies, or under fruit-bearing trees.
  • Use the left hand for cleansing unless there is an excuse.
  • Avoid standing while urinating unless necessary.

    • Remove any items obstructing water (tight rings, thick wax, etc.).
  • Actions That Break Wudhu:
    • Major impurities (janabah).
    • Minor impurities like urination, defecation, and bleeding.

Quranic References

  1. The structure of Wudhu is based on the verse:
“O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles.” (Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:6).

Key Hadith References

  1. “Cleanliness is half of faith.” (Sahih Muslim).
  2. The Prophet ﷺ forbade standing while urinating unless necessary, emphasizing cleanliness and modesty.
  3. Hadith about tilting away from the Qibla while using outdoor bathrooms.

Summarized Question and Answer Sections

Q1: What happens if one starts Wudhu while urine drops are still leaking?
A1: The Wudhu will break every time a drop leaks, making it obligatory to ensure cleanliness before Wudhu (istibra).

Q2: Are private bathrooms exempt from covering the ‘awrah during Wudhu?
A2: Yes, private bathrooms with walls and locks serve the same purpose as clothing, negating the need for covering awrah.

Q3: Can Wudhu be performed with obstacles like nail polish?
A3: No, any barrier preventing water from reaching the skin invalidates Wudhu.

Q4: When does Wudhu become obligatory?
A4: It becomes obligatory when the time for Salah is about to end if one hasn’t already performed Wudhu.
